Let’s see how they translate those vents into the homologation units, they have to automatically build.

The way I read it, homologation isn’t required, did I read that wrong?

Wasn’t the point WRC too keep a link between road and rally cars, with the homologation thingy?

Homologation is really only for when a car is specifically designed for a race series, i.e. race car is built before road car. Without homologation we end up with massively specialized vehicles that have no possible use outside of what they were designed for. Think Nascar or F1. Homologation preserves the link, as you call it, by constraining manufacturers to using designs that are feasible as roadgoing vehicles.

The rules are different when creating a race version of a previously existing road car. Depending on the series they can range from limits to the modifications that can be made, to just having to vaguely resemble the road car.

I get them trying to bring back a little of the Group B-esque madness, but I really hope the cars don’t end up looking like that...

The FIA and the manufacturers already agreed on that basic concept, and even Sebastien Ogier has backed the FIA’s plans for this.

I’m guessing it all depends on how the teams will interpret the rules.

Looks like they won’t be that over the top after all, the new rules are only adding 1.4 inches to the width.
